Record Notes:
Subtitled "The Joe E. Ross Memorial Album" with its cover done up to resemble and parody the Memorial Album of Johnny Ace, the compilation kicks off with Ross' tuneless novelty based on his catch phrase, "Ooh, Ooh." With that as an opening shot, the musical outrageousness stays high throughout, with the Rock Fellers' "Orange Peel," Archie Pier and the Rhythm Aires' "Tamales and Rock and Roll" (sort of like Desi Arnaz cutting a record for Sam Phillips) being head-shaking highlights. But pride of place goes to the set closer, as Ron Robbins' performance of "Heartbreak Hotel" (culled from a local Boston TV talent show, Community Audition) is utterly devoid of melody, predictable chord changes or tunefulness. As an added comic relief bonus (like this compilation really needs it), other talent hopefuls from Community Audition are interspersed between songs. Even nuttier than the first volume, lovers of rock & roll's wild and raw side will love to add this one to the collection.
